What is a model UN conference?
A model United Nations (MUN) conference is a simulation of the United Nations, participants attend to learn about the workings of the UN, to gain a greater understanding of issues that face our world and to take part in all the other day and night events that a MUN has to offer.
How does it work?
A MUN conference works by each participant acting as a given country’s delegate on a variety of UN committees, such as the Security Council. In undertaking this role, they must advocate that country ’s position on the topic at hand with the goal of arriving at a formal resolution. This is achieved through debate, compromise and cooperation with other delegates on their committee.
What can I get out of it?
MUN conferences are a great opportunity for students to employ and develop a diverse range of communication, research, teamwork, leadership, networking and critical thinking skills, as well as learning about the reality of multilateral politics and the UN.
What can I expect during the event?
Committee sessions are the major aspect of a MUN conference, however they are not the only activity in which delegates will participate in during the course of the conference. Model UN conferences often include high profile guest speakers, an opening ceremony which contain cultural performances, career related events, networking events and well as night time social events for all delegates.
