Topic 1: The question of combating the practice and conditions of forced labour.
Director: Serena Gao
“Forced labour” is defined as all work or service which is exacted from any person under the menace of any penalty and for which the said person has not offered himself voluntarily. Grounded in poverty and discrimination, forced labour may take place in the context of domestic work, state coercion, migration and human trafficking. The adoption in 1930 of the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s Forced Labour Convention marked the beginning the widespread prohibition of forced labour.
