The United Nations Development Programme is aimed at assisting developing nations address the various issues that retard their economic, social and political growth. Alongside promoting the recognition of human rights, the UNDP offers practical assistance and advice to Third World countries such as Angola, Afghanistan and Costa Rica. The issue highest on the UNDP priority list is that of poverty reduction. A variety of other issues that stem from this central concern and these include: unemployment, the most efficient means of harnessing natural resources, the supplying of clean sanitation and drinking water, addressing and preventing health epidemics (AIDS) and even ensuring government accountability and promoting democratic governance. Developing nations are encouraged to build strong relations with other states in the international community and therefore to consider the global connotations of their actions – particularly, and increasingly so, with respect to climate change.
