UNESCO is the instrument of the United Nations charged with developing education on a global scale, furthering the sciences and striking the balance between culture preservation and economic progress. In accordance with the Dakar Framework, UNESCO’s education sector strives to provide all primary school children with free and comprehensive education by 2015. It also seeks to increase global adult literacy by about 50%. Its provision of education is aimed at equipping relevant populations with not only literacy and numeracy skills, but also basic life skills.
