The World Trade Organisation was created in 1995 to be a stronger force in the liberalisation of international trade and weakening of trade barriers. The WTO is primarily recognised for its role in reducing trade tariffs on manufactured goods. More recently, the WTO has taken on a role of reducing non-tariff barriers to trade, which, though they may serve important social functions, such as environmental regulations, they are at odds with international trade.
