Sunday 11 July, 7 - 9pm
The Refectory, Holme Building, The University of Sydney
Dress: Smart casual
You will have the opportunity to meet your fellow delegates and enjoy light refreshments following the Opening Ceremony in the Holme Refectory. Inspired by the dining halls of Oxford and Cambridge, the Refectory provides a grand setting for the beginning of the conference, with its fine timber panelled walls, soaring ceilings and renowned mural by Virgil Lo Schiavo. The mural itself is a spectacular backdrop for the opening evening of AMUNC, depicting humanity's many peoples and beliefs, from Western writers such as Shakespeare and Dickens to Buddhist and Muslim philosophers. It portrays a paratrooper in the foreground – the killer – standing close to a Hindu who believes that all killing is wrong. The mural reaches out to the viewer and asks them to put themselves in the shoes of someone from another culture, to consider our common humanity. Its tone is befitting of our theme, ‘We the Peoples’.
